LGBTI

Sexual violence is experienced by people regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. We will support ALL survivors of sexual violence aged 12+, whilst recognising that there may be some unique pressures, threats and hurdles to overcome when disclosing for people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI).

As an LGBTI person, you may be concerned about prejudice, stereotyping, disbelief, trans-phobic/homophobic reactions to your disclosure; you may feel like the abuse has invalidated your own sexual orientation or gender identity and you may feel like you have to “out yourself” in order to receive support. In addition to these concerns, it is not uncommon for the person who has abused you to manipulate these concerns, to use their power and control to make you feel ashamed, embarrassed, powerless and fearful.

At ABRC we can talk all of these things over with you in a safe space where you can share however much you feel comfortable with, at a pace that suits you. We respect your sexual orientation, intersex status, gender identity/expression. We are currently working towards our LGBTI CharterMark which will clearly identify us as an Organisation which can offer appropriate support to LGBTI survivors.
